Problem & Findings

Problems & findings

Stress and loneliness are everywhere, yet many young people still lack a form of companionship they can confide in continuously — without it feeling like a burden.

80% of young people have felt stress and loneliness at some point in their lives.

Many find it hard to truly open up to others… some even feel awkward or uncomfortable expressing their emotions.

Unhealthy ways of coping

People often lean on external stimulation to manage emotions — drinking, eating, partying.

But these bring only short-term relief, and can even make things worse.

Why We Created This

An AI spatial pet that’s all yours

I’M BOLA PET Bola next to a Vision Pro headset

Through ongoing interaction, the AI pet gradually learns the user’s emotions and habits, and adapts how it interacts to their needs — becoming a truly personal digital companion.

Why MR

Why mixed reality is the right home for an AI pet

Unlike characters confined to a phone screen, a pet in MR lives in your real space — and interacts naturally through spatial position, gaze, motion and changes in the environment.

Meta Quest 3, Apple Vision Pro and Pico 4 headsets

MR gives an AI pet a true sense of presence. No longer a character on a screen, it perceives the environment, understands you, and stays by your side as a digital companion.

What can Bola do?

Friendly, adorable — and full of interaction

Interaction, play and AI give people a more natural way to talk to and spend time with their virtual pet. It stops being a cold AI or a virtual character, and gradually becomes a close digital companion.

What was I responsible for?

Idea, character design, gameplay, 3D, UI/UX

I owned the full experience from concept to launch — product concept, character design, core gameplay, 3D assets and MR UI/UX — and contributed to interaction prototyping and spatial-experience validation.

Design Challenge

Iterating through real feedback

Through 10+ pitches and 30+ target-user tests, we kept validating the product direction, found experience issues, and iteratively refined the concept into a buildable MR product.

How do we make interaction truly valuable?

ProblemComplex tasks weakened MR immersion and made companionship feel unnatural.

ApproachShift to lighter games and spatial interaction, so companionship itself is the core experience.

Why would anyone use it in MR?

ProblemEarly features were barely different from a phone app — no reason to use MR.

ApproachCut text and complex UI; emphasize interactions only spatial devices can offer.

How does AI truly become a “pet”?

ProblemSimply adding AI chat still felt like a 3D chatbot with no sense of life.

ApproachLet AI drive the pet’s behavior and reactions — a personal companion that keeps evolving.

Design Challenge 01

How do we make interaction truly valuable?

Previous version

Built around mental-wellness tasks in MR.

Previous version: a chat panel and a 3D hamster on an island in MR
  • Offered a familiar, non-clinical way to regulate emotions.
  • Complex to operate in a headset — a heavy experience.
  • Little bond with the digital pet; it felt like a phone app moved into MR.
Latest version

Focused on immersive interaction and play with a digital pet in MR.

Latest version: Bola in the living room with a floating store panel and toy bubbles
  • A stronger sense of companionship and emotional connection.
  • Streamlined UI and features that spotlight the core experience.
  • Immersive play offers a brief escape from everyday pressure.
Design Challenge 02

Why would people choose to use it in MR?

Previous version

An immersive emotional journal built on AI chat with a digital pet.

Previous version: a dashboard of journaling tools beside a 3D pet
  • More immersive than a phone app.
  • Just moving AI chat into a headset didn’t make MR necessary.
  • Too much text and complex controls added user burden.
Latest version

Play, chat and bond with an AI pet through mini-games.

Bola with a mini-game menu in the room
  • Spatial immersion a phone app can’t deliver.
  • More intuitive interaction strengthens the bond with the AI pet.
  • Leaner UI and information mean less distraction in MR.
Design Challenge 03

How should a digital pet and AI come together?

Previous version

AI conversation as the pet’s core experience.

Previous version: AI-driven conversation dashboard
  • Brought AI into the pet, enabling things a real pet can’t do.
  • Interactions weren’t fun enough — generic, using only basic AI.
  • No continuity or close connection between the AI and the pet.
Latest version

AI drives the pet’s reactions, behavior and continuous adaptation.

Bola reacting during play
  • AI keeps adjusting the pet’s behavior and reactions as you interact.
  • More natural and alive than a plain 3D AI chatbot.
  • Closer to what people expect from an MR digital pet.
What users said

Feedback & reflection

Test user 1

“It blends into my real surroundings so naturally — it doesn’t feel like I’m deliberately using a feature.”

“The pet appears right in my real space. Everything is smooth and there’s nothing extra to learn, so it really feels like it has moved into my everyday environment.”

Test user 2

“It feels like playing a real game, so you want to keep exploring.”

“The game design means interaction isn’t just finishing tasks — there’s a sense of ongoing discovery and participation. It’s far more immersive than a typical functional app.”

Test user 3

“Interacting with the pet is simple — yet never boring.”

“The controls are intuitive; you basically know what to do without thinking, and every action gets clear feedback. It’s relaxed and genuinely fun.”
